Apart from birth, weddings are one of the most celebrated events in South Indian culture. Like all weddings, they symbolize the union of 2 individuals and the joining of 2 families to become a whole entity. They are also social gathering places where members of both families can get together, catch up, and reminisce about old times.
Unlike other weddings, however, a considerable emphasis is placed on tradition, the ancient Sanskrit scriptures, and other religious offerings that must occur for the ceremonies to go smoothly. Each of the two days of the wedding consists of multiple miniature events, each with its symbolism. By the end of the second day, the guests had left, and the only people left were the intimate members of the bride and groom's families.
These photographs were taken at my cousin's wedding in February.
